Der Die Das - Rules for Articles / Gender in German



I never thought we have that much rules for them xD
But without genders, german doesn't work...

In German language, there are three definite articles for nouns in singular: der for masculine nouns, die for feminine nouns and das neutral nouns. German native speakers know mostly intuitively what the article of each noun is. However, non-native speakers need to memorize the articles. There are several rules and guidelines determining the articles of some categories of nouns. But beware exceptions. 

Rules for Article 'Der'



The following nouns have the article der:

  • Nouns for masculine persons and functions/professions: VaterPilotArzt;
  • Names of seasons: FrühlingSommerHerbstWinter;
  • Names of months: JanuarJuliDezember;
  • Names of days of the week: MontagDienstagSonntag;
  • Names of compass directions: Nordwest(en)Süd(en);
  • Names of precipitations: RegenSchneeHagel;
  • Names of car brands: AudiBMWMercedes;
  • Names of trains: IC;
  • Nouns derived from verbs without suffix: GangFang;

The following categories of nouns have mainly the article der:

  • Names of alcoholic beverages: CognacWeinWhiskey
    exceptions: das Bier;
  • Names of rivers outside Europe: AmazonasMississippi;
  • Names of mountains: Mont BlancKilimanjaro
    exception: die Zugspitze;

Furthermore, nouns with the suffixes below have the article der:

  • –er (nouns derived from verbs): FahrerLehrer;
  • –ismusKapitalismusJournalismus;

Most of nouns with the following suffixes have the article der:

  • –antDemonstrantElefant
    exceptions: das Croissantdas Restaurant;
  • –lingLehrlingSchützling
    exceptions: das Dribblingdas Bowling;
  • –nerRentnerSchaffnerZöllner
    exceptions: das Bannerdie Wiener (Wurst);
  • –orMotorTraktor
    exceptions: das Gegentordas Chlor;

Beware: this is applicable only to nouns in singular. All nouns in plural have the article die.

Beware: diminutives have always the article dasder Kopf → das Köpfchen.

 
 

Rules for Article 'Die'



The following nouns have the article die:

  • Nouns for feminine persons and functions/professions: MutterFriseuseÄrztin;
  • Names of motorcycle brands: Harley DavidsonBMW (only motorcycle), Yamaha;
  • Names of planes and ships: Boeing 747Titanic;
  • Cardinal numbers: EinsDrei;

The following categories of nouns have mainly the article die:

  • Names of plants and trees: BirkeChrysanthemeRose
    exceptions: der Ahorndas Veilchen;

Furthermore, nouns with the suffixes below have the article die:

  • –faltVielfalt;
  • –heitFreiheitSicherheit;
  • –keitMöglichkeitSchnelligkeit;
  • –schaftFreundschaftMannschaft;
  • –t (nouns derived from verbs): FahrtTat;
  • –ungLeitungZeitung;

Foreign nouns with the suffixes below have the article die:

The following nouns have the article das:

  • Diminutives (–chen–lein): KaninchenFräulein;
  • Nouns derived from infinitives: EssenSchreiben;
  • Nouns derived from adjectives: GuteBöse;
  • Names of colors: RotGelbBlau;

The following categories of nouns have mainly the article das:

  • Almost all of the 112 known chemical elements: AluminiumKupferUran
    6 exceptions: der Kohlenstoffder Sauerstoffder Stickstoffder Wasserstoffder Phosphorder Schwefel;
  • Names of metals: BleiMessingZinn
    exceptions: die Bronzeder Stahl;
  • Fractions: Drittel (⅓), Viertel (¼); 
    exception: die Hälfte (½);

Furthermore, nouns with the suffixes below have the article das:

  • –ialMaterialPotenzial;

Most of nouns with the following suffixes have the article das:

  • –mentInstrumentParlament
    exceptions: der Konsumentder Zement;
  • –nisErgebnisTennis
    exceptions: die Fahrerlaubnisdie Wildnis;
  • –oAutoKonto
    exceptions: die Avocadoder Euro;
  • –tumQuantumUltimatum;

  • –um (nouns of Latin origin): PublikumMuseumStadium;

Beware: this is applicable only to nouns in singular. All nouns in plural have the article die.

Words with more Articles



There are also many nouns with more articles. In some cases, the article determines the meaning of the word:

  • der Band (hardcover book), die Band (music group), das Band (tape);
  • der Lama (buddhist priest), das Lama (animal);
  • der Kiwi (bird), die Kiwi (fruit);

Sometimes, two or three articles are possible: der / die / das Joghurtder / das Meterder / das Virus.
