Maybe you know it and maybe you don't but I'm a person that is you might say very much interested in history and I've dealt with the world wars in much detail and I am still reading about it. So let me present you a novel I'm just reading right now. For me it is touching, because it shows the true face of war and maybe it will help you to see how cruel and stupid war is when young people - age of us maybe - have to give their lifes for nothing. Well "for nothing " is a bit wrong but well... in the end (in case WWI here) only some years later Hitler followed 1933 officially and as you all know it got worse for us Germans at 1939 AND of course other nations, too. (Yet WE are the ones who people still call that N*** word tche.)
Anyway. The novel was written in 1929 and published in Germany - that's where it comes from "Im Westen nichts neues" / All quiet on the Western Front" - maybe you know the movie but do not choose the movie over it !

All Quiet on the Western Front (German: Im Westen nichts Neues, lit. In the West Nothing New) is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I. The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front.
Im Westen nichts Neues ist ein Roman von Erich Maria Remarque, der die Schrecken des Ersten Weltkriegs aus der Sicht eines jungen Soldaten schildert. Thomas Schneider, Herausgeber einer neuen Taschenbuchausgabe des Textes und seit 2000 Leiter des Erich Maria Remarque-Friedenszentrums in Osnabrück, bezeichnet den Roman als „perfekt konstruierte[…], alternierende[…] Abfolge von grausamen, abschreckenden, emotional aufwühlenden mit retardierenden und reflexiven aber auch humoresken Standardsituationen des ,Kriegs'“.Das Werk wird oft als Antikriegsroman aufgefasst.
Im Westen nichts Neues erschien als Vorabdruck erstmals seit dem 10. November 1928 in der Vossischen Zeitung, in Buchform beim Propyläen Verlag am 29. Januar 1929. Innerhalb von elf Wochen erreichte es nach Verlagsangaben eine Auflage von 450.000 Exemplaren. Es wurde noch im selben Jahr in 26 Sprachen übersetzt. Bis heute gibt es Ausgaben in über 50 Sprachen, die geschätzten Verkaufszahlen weltweit (Stand: 2007) liegen bei über 20 Millionen. Kein im Original deutschsprachiger Erzähltext hat jemals eine höhere Verkaufszahl erzielt.
Bei den Nationalsozialisten hatte sich Remarque mit seinem Roman Feinde gemacht. Als Teil ihrer Rufmordkampagne gegen den missliebigen Autor bezweifelten sie dessen Authentizität und verbreiteten das Gerücht, er habe überhaupt nicht am Ersten Weltkrieg teilgenommen. Während der nationalsozialistischen Bücherverbrennungen 1933 wurden auch zahlreiche Exemplare von Im Westen nichts Neues vernichtet.
